Project Title

 

Increase in income of Households of small and marginal women farmers through capacity building around lac, agriculture and animal husbandry in Palamu, Latehar, Ranchi and Simdega districts of Jharkhand.
Brief Background

 

The Mahila Kisan Sashaktikaran Pariyojana (MKSP), a Government of India programme under the National Rural Livelihoods Mission aims at improving the capacities of women in agriculture to access the resources of other institutions and schemes within a convergence framework. The core focus of MKSP under sustainable agriculture sector is to promote agriculture on sustainable basis where the inputs are localized, risks are mitigated, productivity is enhanced, food security is ensured and hence net income of family is increased. The SPWD intervention is in the four districts of Jharkhand namely Ranchi, Daltonganj, Latehar and Simdega. In total 75 villages are being covered by targeting 7500 households in seven development blocks of these districts. The project is covering women households through interventions in farm based and NTFP based livelihood promotion.
Broad objectives
  • Create sustainable livelihood institutions of women around agriculture and allied activities by strengthening Women Self-help groups
  • Create sector-specific geography specific sustainable package of practices
  • Drudgery reduction for women farmers
  • Sustainable increase in income from primary sector livelihoods (Rs. 30,000 to 50,000 per annum)
  • Promoting and enhancing food and nutritional security at Household and Community level
  • Create a wide pool of community resource persons for scaling up livelihood interventions in the entire country
  • Enable women to have better access to inputs and services of the government and other agencies
  • Poorest of poor focus–specific initiatives for the landless, small and marginal farmers as project participant
  • Initiate use of local resource based developed organic pest and fertiliser in farming system
Specific Objective Strengthen 7500 HH under women leadership through 225 + SHGs to ensure intensification method of farming by incorporating Sustainable Integrated Farming System, Lac cultivation and animal husbandry practices for sustainable livelihood practices in model approach

Brief Progress

 

Till Dec 2015, the project has reached upto 4000 HH across the project locations by strengthening 239 women SHGs and 10 Village Organisations. Even in the recurring draught conditions in the State of Jharkhand since last two years the outputs are remarkable. The Saving on chemical fertiliser and pesticide (Rs. / Acre) in Paddy (SRI) is Rs. 1900/-, Wheat (SWI) is Rs. 2000/-, Potato is Rs. 1800/- . The Increase in Yield (quantal/ acres) in Paddy is 2.5, Wheat is 2, Arhar is 0.8, Potato is 5, Finger millet is 3. The additional income in Rs/acre in crops like Paddy is Rs. 3000/-, Wheat Rs. 2600/-, Arhar Rs. 8000/-, Potato Rs. 5000/-, Finger Millet Rs. 4500/- . In Goatry due to proper vaccination and deworming etc. the increase in yield is 3kg  per goat which is worth Rs. 1200/- and in NTFP based Lac the increase in yield is 2.5 kg / tree which is Rs. 375/- per tree.
